Who is this mysterious man with the alias "Hamid Reza Zakeri"? Federal Prosecutor Bruno Jost says Zakeri claims to have worked with the Iranian secret service as "Special agent M 941 H." It is unclear what the combination means, but Jost is sure that Zakeri, a man in his mid- to late thirties, is an "intelligence service agent from top to bottom."

The Iranian presents himself as follows: from 1984 to 2001 he worked in the "Ministry of Information and Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran (MOIS)." Starting in 1988, he headed the MOIS station in Canada for six years. In 1994, he returned to Iran and headed the office of a general director in MOIS. Five years later, a new secret service was created, the "Intelligence Organization of the Leader," meaning "Revolutionary Leader" Ayatollah Khamenei. According to Zakeri, the new organization''s job was to monitor the other Iranian services.

Zakeri allegedly belonged to a department in which terror actions were also planned. In addition, he was responsible for security at the meeting between Khamenei and al-Qa''ida leaders, Zakeri says. And he took into custody the Swedish ambassador who then worked for Iran. In July 2001, Zakeri says, he fled to Azerbaijan out of fear of being "liquidated."

Zakeri may have been a double agent. He reportedly had contacts with the CIA since 1992. The Americans still owed him $1.2 million. And, Zakeri complains, they simply ignored his warning about 11 September.
